The Comment Spam Story Project

August 6th, 2010 § 1 comment

Every blogger I know talks about the disease known as comment spam. I am going to use comment spam for this project.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve noticed the amount of comment spam on my blog go up. Luckily, Akismet catches almost 100 percent of the comment spam, and what’s missed is caught by me since I hold every comment for moderation before it is posted to the site. Some of the comment spam is cleverly disguised as legitimate comments and some of it is not. I usually get the spam that looks legitimate, the stuff that sells something or random strings of words that make no sense. Surprisingly, very little of the comment spam on this blog is the kind selling “natural enhancements” to gullible men with self-esteem problems.

Since the spammers, whether real people or bots, are so creative in their attempts to get spam through my filters and through me when I moderate comments, I’ve decided to do something creative with the spam comments as they come in.

I am starting the Comment Spam Story Project. This is how it will work:

Over the next few weeks, rather than immediately delete the spam caught by Akismet or when I moderate comments, I will save the spam. I will continue to collect the spam comments as I blog normally and continue to update this site as I do under normal circumstances. Once I have a good number of spam comments saved, I intend to take the words from the spam comments and write a story using only the words in those comments.

That’s right, in a few weeks’ time, I will attempt to write a unique story with only the words included in the comment spam this blog receives.

Sounds like fun to write and fun to read. I look forward to seeing how it turns out!

As a creative exercise, I recently decided to make minor edits to spam comments and then approve them with links removed. I like your idea better though. Spam is here to stay; might as well embrace it.
