Using Images to Stay Inspired

July 24th, 2010 § 1 comment

Some days, writing a single word feels like completing a full-length novel. Even with all the tools writers have to avoid writer’s block (though some people say writer’s block is a myth), inspiration is hard to come by on some days. On days like today, when I’m feeling less than inspired, I refill my tanks by looking at the work of other talented people. One of my favorite things to do when I need a creative kick in the rear is look at images from Flickr, all created by really talented people. I’ve compiled a list of ten great images that inspire me to write.

Evil monkey from the movie about the evil monkey that eats people

This is a really great image of a really frightening monkey. The evil monkey from Family Guy has nothing on this creepy thing.

¡Que se viene la lluvia Begoñaaaa!

This is a great image of a storm approaching. I like the bright colors in the bottom of the image; a stark contrast of the darkness in the sky. This photograph feels foreboding and hopeful at the same time.

Literature Books

Urban decay images always inspire me to write something. I always imagine the story that lead up to the decay. This image makes me think of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. It’s by the very talented Shane Gorski. If you like his art, check out his store.

clouds over hills

This photograph of a nice hilly field is by photographer Victor Szalvay. He claims in his Flickr profile that he’s an “amateur photography hobbyist” but his photostream says the exact opposite. He’s great and his images inspire creativity.

I personally hate cities, especially cities as huge as NYC, but this shot shows just how impressive cities can be. I like to write stories about a single person in a city. It makes me feel like I’m drilling into the mind of a drone in an ant colony. Really, aren’t cities like ant colonies?

Alone

There’s something about this photo that gets me. The lonely tree, the single cloud, the incline of the hill – it inspires thoughts of strength and loneliness for me, all at the same time. It’s a great image to look at when you need to get into the mindset for a strong leading character.

The raven (Edgar Allen Poe)

I am a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe, especially his great poem The Raven, and love anything inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. Images and art inspired by The Raven inspires me in turn.

Killed by nature

This photograph from Yellowstone National Park is simply amazing. I love how you see the lifelessness in the foreground of the photo, but in the background of the image, you see the lively forest. It’s just a fantastic shot that serves up endless helpings of creativity.

Calm

Photographs like this inspire me because they are reminders that there are still places in the world where you can find peace and quiet. Even with the clouds in the sky in this photograph, I can’t help but imagine it being a quiet, tranquil scene.

Tree of Life

This great capture works on many levels to inspire me. Each time I look at it, it inspires me in a different way. The photographer’s photostream is full of lovely and surreal images.

I would like to thank each photographer of the images above for licensing their work as creative commons under their respective license types. Please be sure to click each attribution link to view more images by the immensely talented photographers.
